Broken Fall (Again) is an interactive video installation that is part of the exhibition Archaeologies. Archaeologies presents two interactive installations with a common approach and subjects. The starting point for both installations is existing film material, through which the author studies different aspects of the experience of reality.
The title Broken Fall (Again) refers to the work of Dutch conceptual artist Bas Jan Ader. His films show various falls, the risk of being injured that the artist exposes himself to and his complete lack of any attempt to maintain control are shocking. The topic of failure and the vulnerability as an invariable human characteristic have provoked many artists after Ader to reconstruct his performances. In her current work, Albena Baeva, has studied Ader’s Broken Fall (Organic). She adds the audience as a new element to this emblematic work. A small trampoline enables audience members to control the movement in the video. The relation between the falling body in the projection and the spectator’s jump turns these two states – of jumping and falling – into inseparable elements of a joint freefall experience. As we experience these again and again, we are confronted with the connection between cause and effect, between impulse and its natural continuation. The fear of falling is presented as a basic human basic mechanism and the fall as a metaphor for vulnerability, for our fear of loss and failure, which has been genetically embedded in our very first step forwards and upwards.

“Broken Fall (Again)”е интерактивна видео инсталация, част от изложбата “Археологии”. “Археологии” представя две интерактивни инсталации с общ подход и тематика. Изходна точка и при двете е готов филмов материал, чрез който авторката изследва аспекти от преживяването на реалността.
Заглавието “Broken Fall (Again)” е свързано с работата на холандския концептуалист Бас Ян Адер. Неговите филми показват различни падания като шокират с очевидния риск от нараняване и с липсата на опит за контрол. Темата за неуспеха и ранимостта като неизменна човешка характеристика провокира много последователи на Адер да реконструират пърформансите му. Сред тях е и Албена Баева, която изследва една от работите му – “Broken Fall (Organic)”. Тя добавя нов елемент към тази емблематична работа – публиката. Малък трамплин дава шанс на зрителя да управлява движението във видеото. Връзката между падащото тяло от прожекцията и скока на зрителя превръщат тези две състояния – на скок и падане – в неделими елементи от едно общо преживяване на свободно падане. Преживявайки ги отново и отново, осъзнаваме връзката между причина и следствие, между импулс и неговото естествено продължение. Страхът от падане е представен като базов механизъм в човешкия живот, а самото падане като метафора на ранимостта, на страха ни от загуба и провал, генетично заложени в първата ни стъпка напред и нагоре.
